Additional Grant Funding

Pupil Premium

The pupil premium is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.  For details of our spend and impact including Covid Catch up funding see our report

PE & Sport, Year 7 Catch-Up Premium

The government gives extra funding to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport. This funding – provided jointly by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport – is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.

Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils, but they are free to choose the best way of using the money. For example, the funding can be used to:

  • Hire specialist PE teachers
  • Hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
  • Provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport
  • Support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs.
  • Run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
  • Run sports activities with other schools
  • Use of community resources for sports and physical activity (including Arsenal FC community programme)
  • Bikeability for Phase 1 and 2

What has been our approach and rational to allocating these funds?

The Governors and the SLT have agreed that the money must be used so that all children benefited regardless of sporting ability. In the previous 12 months the students and parents had really valued the swimming lessons which we offered at the local Cally Pool, but the amount of individual support the instructor could give each student was limited. The decision was made to increase the number of swimming sessions to two per week. This enabled us to split the sessions between Phase 3 and Phases 1 and 2. We also paid for an additional instructor so that the instruction could be differentiated. During the year all students took part in swimming lessons and all students making progress in a range of different strokes and self-safe rescue techniques. Students are awarded certificates by the centre and a display summarising and celebrating their achievements is kept updated in reception. Alongside this, PFS also ran two Bikeability courses (Levels 1 and 2) for students as well as providing weekly visits to Arsenal FC Community based programme.
